Check hard drive space
I’ve had clients ask me if they should take files off because they’re worried they’re jogging out of room. Frequently these clients only have a few wordprocessing documents that will fit easily on an old floppy disk and they don’t have any reason to worry.
If you have a lot of videos, music files, images and other activities that really do use a great deal of space then how much remains empty is usually an issue for you. Virtually any computer needs plenty of totally free space for working with.To evaluate how much of your hard drive is used.
Start System Profiler. app from the Applications > Utilities folder.
Under Components in the left-hand Articles column select Serial-ATA. Information of the drives in your Mac are exhibited on the right. My personal screenshot shows I still have around 285GB available. That means the drive is around half full and i also still have plenty of room.
If the available free space on your Mac’s hard drive is around 20% or less of the total capacity then consider how to free up more space.
Trash files you actually no more need. Bear in mind to empty the Rubbish to make the space available.
Move some data files into long-term storage and trash the copies that stick to the hard drive.
Buy an extra hard drive and move some files to there.
Mount a bigger hard drive in the Mac and move your files to it.
